Five Empire-sized Slices that you need to try while in New York
Any trip to New York City should be complemented by a slice of the comfort food Gotham is known for – New York-style pizza.
The platforms beneath Grand Central Terminal may be dark, but the streets above burst to life when you walk out of the station into the Big Apple. Any trip to New York City should be complemented by a slice of the comfort food Gotham is known for – New York-style pizza.
Stop number one, right around the corner from Grand Central, can be found in the cozy indoor market facing Vanderbilt Avenue. Roberta’s Pizza serves authentic Margherita pies that are packed with flavor. Baked in the traditional Italian fashion, each personal pizza contains zesty seasoned sauce sitting on a thick crust and will set you back $9 an order.
Taking the 6 Train down to Bleeker Street, the next stop is a staple of New York’s Little Italy. Prince Street Pizza opened as recently as 2012, but its location in an old tenement building with photo and memorabilia-filled counters boasts snapshots and autographs from famous celebrities like Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy and Rami Malik. Prince Street Pizza specializes in crispy, bakery-style Pizza with generous toppings of pepperoni, and each so-called “spicy pepperoni square” packs a fiery punch.
Running the width of lower Manhattan, Bleeker Street ties the heart of Little Italy with Greenwich Village and is lined with Italian restaurants and pizza shops. Joe’s Pizza of Greenwich Village offers traditional floppy New York slices alongside Margherita and mozzarella pizza slices. While the standing room is limited, you can enjoy your order across the street in the historic Father Demo Square. Further down the street, Bleeker Street Pizza cooks up large pies to go. Be sure to order their staple pizza, the Nonna Maria – named after a famed secret recipe for a delicious margarita pizza.
Finally, a trip to New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to John’s of Bleeker Street. Regarded as the birthplace of American pizza, you’ll have to sit down and order from the menu as no single slices are available. With their signature smooth tomato sauce and garnish topping each pie, John’s of Bleeker Street is the only authentic coal-fired oven-baked pizzeria in Manhattan. Wash down your meal with a selection of local IPAs or a white wine, and remember to be on the lookout for famous faces who frequent the legendary restaurant!
