Inside Look at the Planetarium

Adventure Through Space in the Planetarium at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium.

A visit to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is not complete without experiencing the newly renovated Planetarium. Not only is it the only public planetarium in Palm Beach County, but each show and presentation is picked to take guests on an expedition through space.

Amanda Long, Assistant Programs Coordinator and Planetarium Educator, shares a behind-the-scenes look at how the planetarium brings space to life.

While the planetarium has a couple standard shows in rotation, some are chosen specifically to compliment the exhibits in the science center.

“Currently, we have our special Grossology exhibit, which is all about the body, and so we like to have a show, Astronaut, which relates to that by showing the effects of space travel on the human body,” said Long.

The most popular show with children is by far the One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure.

“Little kids just love that,” said Long. “It gets them really immersed into space.”

At first, the big dome theater can be intimidating for some children.

“Little kids that are really nervous ask if it’s scary,” said Long. “But, once they are in there, they can see it is just like a movie, but it is around you.”

The large dome shape of the planetarium allows kids and adults alike to experience a very life-like sensation of flying through space all while remaining still in their seat.

“A dome is going to make it look a lot more immersive,” said Long. “People sometimes think they are actually moving.”

As different as each show is, they are all selected to achieve a common goal.

“All of the shows have a conservation type theme, really what we are trying to promote is people being as green as they can,” said Long. “There is no place as great as the earth. We need to save the earth and work together to do that.”
